Photorejuvenation involves removing signs of aging caused by the undesirable effects of the sun, as well as other factors (genetic or vascular, for example). It acts on the epidermis of exposed parts of the body, especially the face, neck, upper chest and back of the hands. The process "erases" aging signs as diverse as hyper-pigmentation, lentigines, redness, dilated pores and rough skin.
Why photorejuvenation ?
The benefits of photorejuvenation include a consistent skin color and glowing complexion. The results are particularly remarkable in the case of smokers.
This treatment is often combined with remodelling, another non-invasive and pain-free technique which involves heating the dermis while cooling the epidermis in order to stimulate natural collagen production and firm the skin.
While photorejuvenation targets signs of aging in the uppermost layer, remodelling aims at improving the elasticity and tone of the dermis, diminishing fine lines. It is recommended that photorejuvenation be alternated with remodelling.
A schedule will be determined by the doctor after an examination of your epidermis upon your first visit to the Centre.
Remodelling and photorejuvenation treatment methods
At the Centre Laser Sorbonne we have a whole range of flashlamps (Intense Pulsed Light, IPL) and lasers allowing for these two methods, photorejuvenation and remodelling, intended to prevent or reduce skin aging.
For photorejuvenation we normally use the ICON MAXG technology from Cynosure.
Flashlamps are high-intensity lamps filled with a noble gas that emits strong flashes when an electrical current passes through the gas. Flashlamps function in a pulsed mode, converting the electrical energy into intense waves of radiating energy, covering the spectrum from visible ultra-violet to infrared.
Unlike lasers, flashlamps are polychromatic.
The lamp’s broad spectrum allows it to act simultaneously on different types of lesions by attacking different targets. Thus, a flashlamp will treat both brown and red spots. This explains why the flashlamp, though not a laser, must be reserved for the use of highly experienced doctors.
A typical photorejuvenation laser or IPL session
Photorejuvenation normally requires four thirty-minute sessions scheduled one month apart. A layer of gel is applied to the face, neck, upper chest and the back of the hands before treatment.
The patient wears a pair of metal goggles, and the doctor a pair of appropriate glasses.
Laser or IPL photorejuvenation potential counter-indications
- An active skin infection on the area to be treated.
- A suspicious lesion requires a dermatological consultation before treatment.

- Use of photosensitive medication
- Phototypes V and VI
- Use of isotretinoin-based treatment
- Pregnancy constitutes a counter-indication as a matter of principle.
After your photo-rejuvenation session …
Flashlamp sessions are relatively painless. If the lamp encounters any pigmented spots or vessels, these will temporarily darken and perhaps form tiny scabs, depending on the severity of the lesions. However, you may resume your normal activities immediately after the session.
Photorejuvenation or remodelling cost of treatment
The initial medical consultation is with the doctor who will eventually treat you and will be invoiced 45 €.
He or she will provide information on the benefits you may expect from treatment. You will be given an estimate and perhaps a test. The price of each session varies from 80 to 300 €, depending on the number and size of the areas to be treated.

The Centre Laser Sorbonne also offers Microneedle EndyMed, which allows non-ablative treatment of acne scars, deep wrinkles, certain stretch marks, etc. This technique induces a deep dermal heating without removing the epidermis. This technique perfectly complements the 2 fractional lasers on the platform (fractional CO2 ablative laser and fractional non-ablative laser) giving the doctor the possibility of choosing the most suitable solution for each patient.
