FAQ botulinum toxin injections

Currently offered to patients who want to reduce their upper facial wrinkles, the botulinum toxin has proven its effectiveness against forehead wrinkles, crow’s feet wrinkles and inter-eyebrow wrinkles.
Botulinum toxin injection is also used by doctors to reduce hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) mainly in the armpits.

- What is the difference between botulinum toxin and Hyaluronic Acid?
Botulinum toxin and hyaluronic acid are two complementary treatments. One does not replace the other. Hyaluronic acid is the treatment of the symptom, that is to say of the wrinkle, filling it. Botulinum toxin is the treatment of the cause of this symptom, i.e. the treatment of the muscles that cause this wrinkle to appear. The two are sometimes complementary.
- How long does a botulinum toxin injection session last?
The botulinum toxin injection takes only a few minutes. The injection points and the quantities to be injected are very precise and require an excellent knowledge of the anatomy of the face. These are determined in advance during your initial information / quote visit to the Centre Laser Sorbonne.
- Are there any special precautions after an injection of botulinum toxin?
After an injection of botulinum toxin, do not massage the treated area. The muscles in the injected area should not be contracted for the first hour after the injection and you should not lie down or tilt your head down.
- How long after the effects of botulinum toxin appear?
The effect of the botulinum toxin injection is not immediate. A touch-up may be necessary after ten days. It usually takes between 2 and 4 weeks for the botulinum toxin to fully take effect.
- Should I repeat the botulinum toxin sessions?
On average, the action of the botulinum toxin injection lasts 6 to 12 months. As the injections progress, the muscles of the face will relax, the patient will lose the habit of the facial expressions that caused wrinkles to appear, and the injections can therefore be spaced out.
- What are the risks of a botulinum toxin injection?
The injection of botulinum toxin is a common and safe practice of cosmetic medicine, especially when carried out by a qualified doctor. As with any medical procedure, there can be rare complications. These are laid out in the information sheet of the French Society of Aesthetic and Plastic Surgery and will be explained to you during your first information meeting at the Centre Laser Sorbonne.
- How old must I be to begin botulinum toxin injections?
There is no recommended age to begin botulinum toxin injections. As soon as the first small expression lines appear, an injection of a small amount of botulinum toxin can have a preventive effect, stopping the wrinkle from widening. The aging of the face will be slowed down.
