    Onychomycosis : Nail Fungus

    Onycomycose : mycose des ongles

Onychomycosis, or nail fungus, affects approximately 36 million people in the US. The PinPointe FootLaser provides new hope for these patients. In fact, clinical studies show that after a single procedure, more than 70% of patients experienced sustained improvement in the appearance of clear nail.

Though other options are available, PinPointe™ FootLaser™ poses none of the risk or harmful side effects that often result from these alternatives. And, even better, this convenient in-office procedure typically takes only about 30 minutes to perform.

How to treat nail fungus ?

Nail fungus is a chronic condition that impacts your quality of life and can even lead to serious health problems for patients with diabetes or immune disorders.

Nail fungus is difficult because the infection is under and inside of the nail, which makes it hard for some products to reach and destroy the infection. Products such as medicated nail polish or oral medications may be associated with side effects or serious drug interactions. Home remedies such as using bleach, vinegar, mouthwash, or household cleaners to resolve the problem are often tried but, ultimately, fail to resolve it.

The PinPointe™ FootLaser™ is the first FDA cleared laser for the temporary increase of clear nail in patients with Onychomycosis.

The PinPointe™ FootLaser™ targets the fungus that lives in and under the nail. The laser light passes through the nail without causing damage to the nail or the surrounding skin. At the time of the procedure, the toenail will not become instantly clear— it takes time to grow out.

    Laser sessions against nail fungus

The process begins with a consultation in which you explain the procedure that is to be performed and any follow-up visits that you prescribe.

Potential side effects of nail fugus treatment

Some precautions must be taken when treating patients with peripheral vascular diseases (such as Raynaud’s syndrome) or neuropathies (eg diabetic neuropathy).

Doctors also choose not to carry out treatment during pregnancy for simple medico-legal reasons.

    Potential side effects :

  • Impression of heat and mild or moderate pain during treatment
  • Redness of the treated skin around the nail (for 24-72 hours) Discoloration or burning marks (black spots that will disappear when the nail grows back) may appear on the nail
  • Slight swelling of the treated skin around the nail (for 24 hours) In rare cases, the laser creates "sparks" on the surface of the nail - this phenomenon is not serious.
  • For most patients it is vitually painless. Some may feel a warming sensation. An isolated few may feel a slight pinprick.

After the treatment against Nail Fungus …

Most patients report seeing an improvement after one procedure. However, there is a chance of reinfection because the fungus is present everywhere in the environment. You can recommend care techniques to help reduce a recurrence of the infection.

Patients can apply polish immediately after the procedure. It is important to inform the patient that they should remove all nail polish and nail decorations the day before their procedure. .

    Some additional recommendations :

  • Use clean socks after the laser session
  • Do not walk barefoot in public spaces
  • Avoid pedicure care except in medical centers where the instruments are always sterilized
  • Throw away all started nail polish
  • Replace or sterilize all nail tools
  • Never keep nail polish more than 1 to 2 weeks in a row, and after removing it, let the nails "breathe" for a few days
