Pigmented Spots

Laser technology is often a good solution for the treatment of other pigmented spots, such as "café au lait" spots and masks of pregnancy (melasma).

The former result from an excess of melanin. Frequently appearing in early childhood, they are flat and of varying color and size. When they are unsightly, laser treatment is a good solution for erasing them.

Chloasma (mask of pregnancy, melasma) is the name for symmetrical pigmented patches usually found on the forehead and cheeks, covering the cheekbones and sometimes the temples. It most often occurs among young women during hormone changes such as pregnancy.

Pigmented Spot Laser Treatment

Two types of lasers are used:

- Abrasive lasers remove the uppermost layer of the skin, containing the spot’s pigment.
- Photomechanical lasers, which volatilize the melanin in the spot, causing no burning or abrasion.

At the Centre Laser Sorbonne we use the latter type, a Q-Switched REVLITE from HOYA ConBio.
The doctor of the Centre may also recommend treatment with flashlamp (IPL), the Harmony AFT 570 from Alma Lasers.

The choice of equipment will be made by the doctor depending on the lesions and your skin type.

A Typical Laser or IPL Lentigo Treatment

Protective eyewear is necessary for the patient as well as the doctor.

- Laser treatment generally involves one to two fifteen-minute sessions scheduled four to six weeks apart. The patient feels a sensation similar to the snap of a rubber band, followed by a hot, burning feeling.
A blanching of the lesions is rapidly followed by an erythema and a swelling around them.

- Flashlamp or Harmony treatment generally require four sessions scheduled one month apart.

A grayish color at the area of the spot is a sign of the treatment’s effectiveness.

Pigmented Spot Potential Counter-Indications

At your first consultation it is important to correctly evaluate the pigmented lesion before treating it. Sometimes a dermatoscopy or biopsy will be necessary.

The doctor may prescribe a skin preparation to relax the melanocytic system if he or she considers it necessary.

After your Lentigo Laser Treatment …

The skin containing the pigments will be eliminated after forming tiny scabs, which are often darker than the original pigmented spot.

These scabs usually disappear in approximately eight days, leaving a smooth, new skin. At first pinkish, this new skin will gain its natural color in a matter of weeks.

The skin should be strictly protected from the sun until completely healed.

Lentigo Laser or IPL Treatment Cost

Your first appointment will be a medical consultation and will be invoiced 45 € TTC.
The cost of a session depends on the number of lesions to be treated and their size. As an indication, a ten-minute session costs approximately 90 €.
